City Lights
As a rural transplant into the city, I am aware of the difference of lifestyle and pace of living in a way that may escape urban natives. I am also of the generation that is old enough to remember life before computers, the internet, and social media, but I am still young enough to be comfortable with it. I see similarities between the two, both the urban world and the digital world present an increasing pace of life, a great deal of visual density, an abundance of stimuli, and a lot of noise. I think that one can be used as a metaphor for the other.
I start with photographs of the city as source material, then I combine and alter the images with the goal of expressing the busier elements of urbanness in general, rather than focusing on a specific location or viewpoint. I also look to the limitations, possibilities and quirks that are common to digital image making for ideas. The choices I make throughout the painting process are informed by this digital aesthetic. Many of the techniques I employ are an attempt to use the unique elements of digital imaging making in paint.
