Whole movements and styles of painting have been dedicated to the process of painting. As much as I love abstract expressionism, I really, really don’t like the term “process painting”. I don’t walk into a gallery to see the verb form of painting; I’m after nouns. I want to see a well-executed finished piece.

Eventually, I will post a rant about my dislike of the phrase “process painting”, but this is no that occasion. On this occasion, I will be talking about what I think is a much better way of capturing and exhibiting the process of painting. I will be talking about video.

I’ve been a part of the YouTube community since 2006, and one thing I’ve shown a couple of times is footage of myself creating paintings.

It started while I was living overseas. While I was in Korea, I was posting videos on a weekly basis. Most of the time I was making videos about eating weird foods or travelling, but I also made a few videos showing how I go about the painting process.

I really enjoyed the experience of filming myself paint.

To be honest, after posting over 175 videos, I kind of forgot about many of them. I ‘re-discovered’ these videos last night, as I was posting a timelapse sequence of myself at work in the studio.

For the most part, my YouTube channel is used as a dump for my video content. I upload everything to the one channel and leave it to the search engines to do the sorting.

So, I’ve pulled back the curtain for you, revealing the mystery of what goes on in an artists studio.

Yea, it’s a little anticlimactic; it’s just a guy working in a space, but that’s what the process of art making looks like.

And, I can’t talk about YouTube for this long without being overcome by the temptation to promote my channel.
